Pramod Mahajan was an Indian politician who was a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. At the time period of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he remained the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs 13 October, 1999 to 29 January, 2003 and Minister of Communications and Information Technology from 2 September, 2001 to 28 January,2003. Mahajan was from Maharashtra and belonged to a group of relatively young technocratic leader. In 1986, Pramod became the psesident of All India Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha which is the youth wing of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and also known as Indian People’s Youth Front. Due to his organizational skills and hard work, Mahajan got prominent and important position in Maharashtra State and then at the national level too.
Mahajan is considered the builder of party’s fortunes by his hard work in the state of Maharashtra and he was responsible for his party’s allience with the prominent political leader Shiv Sena.
He was always credited with responsibility that his party (BJP) secured numerous election victories. But Mahajan contested rarely and gained very less victories in popular elections. Although, Mahajan had been elected to Parliament several times through Rajya Sabha (the indirectly elected upper house). He provided his services in the Rajya Sabha in 1986 to 1992, 1992 to 1996 and 1998 to 2004.
Early Life & Education
Pramod Vyankatesh Mahajan was born on 30 October, 1949 in Mahbubnagar ( present-day Telangana), India. He belongs to a Deshastha Brahmin famliy. His father name is Venkatesh Devidas Mahajan and Prabhabati Mahajan was his mother. Pramod was the second child of his parents with two brothers Pravin and Prakash. He has also two sisters Pratibha and Prandiya. When he was just 21 years old his father Venkatesh Mahajan got died.
Mahajan has completed his bachelor’s degree in Journalism & Physics and then got the post graduate degree in Political Science. He is also certified typewriter from Mahajan Typewriting Institute, Ambajogai.
Marriage
Pramod was very close to Rekha Hamine and got married with her on 11th March, 1972. The couple have two children Poonam Mahajan (daughter) and Rahul Mahajan (son).
Political Career
Mahajan was interested in politics since his childhood and he started his political career with the membership of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1970, when he was a sub editor in a Marathi newspaper, Tarun Bharat. He got full time involved in politics in 1974, when Mahjan was a school teacher and due to his business as a political worker, he quit his job. RSS converted to BJP and he remained the All India Secretary of his party. In 1986, Mahajan became the President of All India Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and selected again on this position in1992.
After his prominence at national level, mostly through the upper house he was elected several times. He served for many years 1986 to 2004. In his political career, he hold many sensitive governmental positions and served his country with many revolutions as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Defence, Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha and Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the period of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996 and 2003.
Death
Mahajan was got murdered by his brother Pravin Mahajan on 22 April, 2006. He remained in ICU for 13 days but on 13th day he took his last breath and passed away. In 2007, his murderer brother Pravin Mahajan was sentenced as lifetime imprisonment by the court order.
