Dawson was born in the city of Sydney, Australia. He is the younger of two brothers, with a twin brother named Paul and an older brother named Peter. Dawson was a prefect at Sydney Boys High School. In 1966, he obtained his diploma.

Dawson first met Lynette Simms at a high school function in 1965, when they were both sixteen years old. They married in 1970 at St Jude’s Church in Randwick and had two children. Chris and Paul both played rugby union for the Eastern Suburbs. The Dawson brothers changed sports to play rugby league for the Newtown Jets in 1972. Chris Dawson served five seasons in the second row with the Newtown Jets, with Paul. Chris Dawson persuaded Joanne Curtis to relocate into the family home just two days after his first wife, Lynette, went missing in January 1982. He did not disclose his wife’s disappearance immediately; instead, he did it six weeks later. He said that his wife had left him after marital issues and joined a commune. He went on to finish divorce procedures against his wife in 1983, and in 1984, he reportedly married Joanne Curtis, whom he divorced in 1993. He was found guilty of murdering Lynette in 1982 after a judge-only trial in the Supreme Court of New South Wales on August 30, 2022, despite having previously pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the murder of his wife. On December 2, 2022, he was sentenced to 24 years in prison with an 18-year non-parole period for the murder of Lynette.
