Bajrang Punia is a prominent freestyle wrestler who belongs to India and is the only Indian wrestler to win 4 medals at the World Wrestling Championships. He competes in the 65 kg weight category and had represented his country at all the International wrestling formats. He is 5 feet and 5 inches tall and have 65 kg weight. Punia has won 7 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals for his country in the World Wrestling Championships like; Olympic Games, World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World U23 Wrestling Championships, Asian Championships and Commonwealth Championships. In the year of 2017, he achieved three gold medals in Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Commonwealth Championship and in Asian Games which was the best performance year of his career.
Punia was born on 26th February, 1994 at Khudan, Jhajjar, Haryana, India and grew up in a poor family. His family did not have money for traditional sports but he was encouraged by his father to pursue the sport. At the age of seven years he began wrestling and later his family enrolled him in a local mud wrestlling school at very young age. Due to wrestling practice, Punia skipped the school and went to Chattarsal Stadium in 2008 where he got the training by Ramphal Mann. Then he joined Sports Authority of India, when his family moved to Sonepat. He is also working in Indian Railways at the post of Gazetted officer OSD Sports. He got married to a fellow wrestler Sangeeta Phogat.
Career
Punia started his international career as a freestyle wrestler in 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships which was held in New Delhi and won his first bronze medal in the 60 kg category. In Glasgow, Scotland, he won the silver medal in 61 kg category at 2014 Commonwealth Games and in the same year he again achieved the silver medal in Asian Games with same category. In 2014, he won his third silver medal in Asian Wrestling Championships. Punia won his first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2017 which was held in Delhi, India. In 2018, He won two gold medals at Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. After winning the silver medal in 2018 World Wrestling Championships, he declared the World No. 1 in 65 kg category.
At 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he won the bronze medal match with his career best margin of 8-0 by a Kazakhstani wrestler Daulet Niyazbekov and also feathured in a can by the Indian soft drink manufacturer Thumbs Up. Recently, Bajrang Punia achieved one more gold medal for India in wrestling at 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

In 2015, Bajrang Punia was awarded with Arjuna Award and Padma Shri Award in 2019. He also achieved the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Award in 2019 and FICCI India Sport Award in 2020. For his best performances in International freestyle wrestling championships he was also awarded with cash prizes from The Government of India (30 lakh Indian rupees), from the Government of Haryana (2.5 crore Indian rupees), from the BCCI ( 25 lakh Indian rupees), and from the Indian Olympics Association (25 lakh Indian rupees).
