Sushil Kumar Solanki is a well known and former wrestler of India. He won the first medal for India in 2008 which was the second Olympic medal in wrestling for India. Kumar received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2009 which is the India’s highest honour for sportspersons. At the Commonwealth Games 2014, he won the gold medal in the 74 kg division. Sushil has represented India as a wrestler at Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian Championships and Commonwealth Championships. In all the formats in wrestling, he has won several bronze, silver and gold medals. He has won almost 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medal in different international games formats.

Kumar was born on 26th May, 1983 in a Jat family of a village in South West Delhi. His father name is Diwan SIngh who was a driver and had much interest in wrestling, his mother Kamala Devi is a housewife. Sushil was much inspired by his father and his cousin Sandeep who was also a wrestler. At the age of 14 years he started pehlwani wrestling. Although he belonged to a poor family but they trained and facilitate him for wrestling in India. He is post graduate in Physical Education from Noida College of Physical Education, Dadri and is working as an assistant commercial manager in Indian Railway.

Career, Awards and Nominations

Kumar has started his career with pehlwani wrestling at the age of 14 years at the akhara then he moved to freestyle wrestling. He got his first gold medal at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship in 2000 and won bronze medal at Asian Wrestling Championships in 2003 and placed himself at the fourth. At the Commonwealth Games 2005 and 2007, he won gold medals. Kumar won a bronze medal at 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing and won silver medal at 2012 Summer Olympics. He became the first Indian wrestler who won two Olympics medal for India. In 2006, he was awarded by Arjuna Award and awarded by Padma Shree by the Government of India in 2011.

Kumar became the first Indian wrestler who won the gold medal at 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2010 World Wrestling Championships in the 66kg category. In 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow Kumar won the gold medal in 74 kg category and also acquired the gold medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Australia. He made himself third time consecutive winner of Commonwealth Games. Apart from medals, he was awarded by Millions of Indian Rupees by the Indian Government, organizations and different departments as cash prizes.
